Nick Harper : Tempus Fugitive

Starting with his 2004 album Bloodsongs, I've done all of Nick Harper's album artwork (with the exception of the 2014 album Nix) since then. There have also been many posters, t-shirt designs, and work on both iterations of Harperspace (where you can see more examples of my work in his shop).

This is the cover art for his forthcoming 2023 release, Tempus Fugitive. It's a mixture of Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Dimension and Xara with the tiniest smidgen of AI (The blank frame for the Algiers poster and Nick's hairy chest were added using Photoshop's new Generative Fill feature)

There is, as usual, a 16-page booklet that goes with this (stuffed to the gunwales with various bits of lyric-relevant artwork), but as he's only released the cover art as a taste so far I haven't included any here (yet)

Nick Harper : Phantastes

This is the cover art for his 2020 release, Phantastes. At a later date I'll had a new section dedicated to this particular body of work. It included an 8-page booklet, each page of which had its own weird (digital) painting in the style of the cover.

...Bunch of Arse Pub Band. Beatles "inspired" artwork for Pants, the ridiculous band I've been in since 1996 (That's us in the middle. The three former members are in the recycling bin, bottom right) Rather than fill it up with brilliant and inspiring people, I opted for a huge bunch of pointless, irritating and deplorable people instead.
It took a fair few hours (that I'll never get back) but was probably worth it 🙂

Chris Schuman : Back to The Blitz

Chris Schuman is a teacher at Elstree School in Berkshire, where he is Day Boy House Master and Head of the Junior Department. Every year he writes and produces a school musical. For the past 5 or 6 years I've done all the CD artwork for him: cover art, inlay tray, on-body, booklet etc.

Animation

Barkly

The last company I worked for had a recurring character called Barkly (designed by me) He appeared on the website and in presentations, brochures, expo banners, Instagram and Linkedin posts, and incidental imagery, both in static and animated form.

I'm not an animator, although I do know my around Adobe Animate a little, as you can see 🙂

Nick Harper : The 20-second doodle!

Nick Harper stuff again (I've done a lot for him since 2004!) This is a very quick doodle I did of Nick a few years ago (Although I've since changed his hair colour, as he tends to dye it pink a lot these days) It took about 20 seconds for the initial outlines and a couple of minutes for the colouring in. Apparently it "captures the man in all his glory quite perfectly" (not my words!)

Innovation Mapping specialise in Location-based Analysis, Geographical Information Systems, Spatial Data Visualisation and Infrastructure Mapping. Yeah...I don't have a clue either! It's all clever stuff and way above my limited intelligence and understanding. I'm just the bloke wot draws stuff, innit.

Anyway, I was asked to come up with a series of images that show layers of different data on a map, and how they relate to each other: shown here are a few of those images. I'm happy to see that they're still using one of them on their website even now!

The 7-frame animation lasts about 30 seconds.

When you subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud and choose their "All Apps" option, you get access to a whole bunch of programmes you wouldn't normally use. One of these is Adobe Dimension, which lets you use (existing) models, materials and lighting to quickly put together product mock-ups and the like in 3D. 3DS Max, Maya and Blender it isn't, but it's still a pretty useful bit of kit.

After being relentlessly pummelled and bombarded by sycophancy and cap-doffing during the summer of 2022, I created this. I'm no 3D-modeller, but it still looks pretty good. Cost me a couple of friends on Facebook though!

A Rimmel London advert on tv inspired this (so much so that I missed the end of the show I was watching) Having brilliantly deduced that Rimmel is only one letter away from Rommel, I set about giving the Field Marshal a make-over...

BYOC Film Production House

BYOC : Artwork, video editing, Wordpress

Screenshot of the BYOC Film Production House's home page. As Photoshop compositions go, it's fairly standard and not particularly clever or memorable. The version on the website has a bunch of video clips appearing inside some of the frames on the wall...which makes it look pretty cool, I think. It was put together inside Adobe Animate, exported as a single MP4 and used as a page background in Wordpress.

It looks as if the client had a bit of tinker with the back-end after they got hold of it; a few things don't sit right or look as I remember them...but the video background is still there, which is what I wanted to show you.

Reworking and Redrawing old logos

Sometimes a client supplies their logo as a lovely Adobe Illustrator file; all lovely vectors with the correct colours and font information intact. Sometimes it might be a huge Photoshop file with an intact alpha channel, or they might supply a whole bunch of different sizes, variants and file formats in a zip file...

But sometimes a client's only copy of their logo can be found on an old business card, or as a small gif or badly compressed jpg file on their existing website. Sometimes people are attached to their old logos and want to continue using them, but have no idea where the original version is or, indeed, if it still exists. I've lost count of the number of times this has happened over the years, and have become quite adept at faithfully recreating stuff in Adobe Illustrator/Xara.

Logos! Thousands of 'em!

To paraphrase (and misquote) Nigel Green (Colour Sergeant Bourne) in Zulu: "Logos! Thousands of 'em!"

I have no idea how many logos I've designed over the years. My archive drives are full of them. I've included a small selection of them here. When viewed as just graphics they lose some of their meaning and impact, but a lot of them have no information associated with them any longer; they exist solely as isolated images.
Still: they should give you some idea of my talents in this area 🙂

Peppard : Fifteen on Crash Table One

CD cover art for Fifteen on Crash Table One by the very short-lived Cardiff-based band, Peppard. Given both their name and choice of album title, I presume they were fans of The A-Team (or Breakfast at Tiffany's, or The Blue Max or something) and the rather marvellous Steve Jackson game, Car Wars.
Although not a very complicated piece of work, it remains one of my favourites for some reason.

A selection of characters I designed for the Wiltshire Centre for Independent Living (Their logo was one of those tidy-up jobs too) Their current website bears little resemblance to the one I worked on, but I'm glad to see they're still using some of the characters I made for them! Someone's also made a valiant effort to draw some new ones.

ntouch (I designed their logo, by the way) were the go-between company between many of those 0800 Customer Service numbers on the backs of countless products and the companies themselves. They expertly dealt with all the queries, complaints and praise that arrived and passed all that information on in a series of in-depth reports.

Every now again those reports had to be condensed into an infographic for in-house presentations and the like.

I did a lot of them - both for ntouch and others including the NHS - but have just included the one here.

The Longbarrow at All Cannings

Brochure design : The Long Barrow

Built in 2014, The Long Barrow at All Cannings became the World's first Novolithic Barrow. Brilliantly and faithfully reproduced in the Neolithic style (but with heavy plant machinery. Obvs) It's a registered place of worship, the final resting place of many, and holds free open days at the solstices and equinoxes.

I was asked to design the brochure that later appeared in many museums, shops, community centres and libraries in the Wiltshire area.

I've done a lot of this sort of work, but am just showing the one example here.

Adobe Dimension and Photoshop composite

This was a large and fairly complicated composition that started life as an Adobe Dimension render and then had a ton of things thrown at it in Photoshop.

Designed as a real world / digital world (hence the two dogs )introduction to Bark Like a Big Dog (an exceedingly good marketing company in Basingstoke) it's currently languishing in their Wordpress Staging Environment waiting the launch of their new website.

The dog in the frame on the shelf at the back is my old dog Farley. You might recognise him from frames 1 and 2 of this presentation. As with Alfred Hitchcock and M.Night Shyalaman he's quite partial to a cameo appearance and can be seen in various bits of my artwork over the years 🙂

Well, it's not really. I've been doing this since 1996 and have about 800 million examples of stuff knocking around on old hard drives: icons; web graphics; brochures; leaflets; visual concepts; logo and branding designs; logo reworks and salvage operations; CD and vinyl artwork; Flash, MP4 and gif animations; social media posts; cartoons; Photoshop composites; some basic 3D stuff; photo restorations; memes; entire Wordpress sites from start to finish; infographics and more.

I've tried to include enough here to show you where my talents lie without boring you with page after page of examples 🙂
